New DAQ Module with CAN FD for Increased Bandwidth Requirements Demanded by the Automotive Industry

Test and measurement expert HBM has expanded its range of data acquisition modules by launching the new MX471C module with CAN FD (CAN with flexible data-rate) protocol.

Royston, United Kingdom, April 25, 2019 –(PR.com)– The module is part of the industry standards QuantumX family, providing engineers with universal and flexible solutions for integrating data acquisition systems into CANbus networks.

CAN FD solves the bandwidth limitation problem of classical CAN networks by allowing bit-rates higher than 1 Mbit/s. In addition, it supports payloads in CAN FD messages up to 64 bytes. Many automotive companies make use of this increased bandwidth at low cost which is especially required in today’s electric vehicles.

The MX471 CAN FD module allows the synchronous integration of up to four CAN networks and can be expanded as required. The module, combined with a data recorder and analog measurement modules, is ideal for mobile vehicle tests and as a measurement gateway in test benches.

With the channel in Recorder Mode, any number of signals – such as vehicle speed, steering wheel position or brake command can be acquired simultaneously, with the analog inputs of other QuantumX amplifiers and used, for example, to trigger data storage. This reduces the need for manually applied sensors in the prototype phase and simplifies testing due to a minimized setup duration.

For applications in harsh environments such as in mobile data acquisition for trucks or excavating machines, a rugged version under the type name SomatXR MX471C-R CAN FD has been developed. This module is shock resistant with an IP65/IP67 degree of protection.

QuantumX is one of the world’s leading amplifier systems. Thanks to its modular concept, extensive and flexible measuring setups are possible, with simple connection and high accuracy. For mobile use in difficult conditions, specialized DAQ modules are available under the brand name “SomatXR.”
