About National Literary Trust
www.literacytrust.org.uk
"The Sparrows of Unity" was written in support of the National Literacy Trust - an independent UK-based charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK and giving children and young people from disadvantaged communities the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.
A child who doesnt have good reading, writing and communication skills will be unable to succeed at school and will be locked out of the job market as an adult. Low levels of literacy will increase their chances of experiencing unemployment, poor health and crime. If they become parents, they wont have the skills to support their own childrens learning, reinforcing the intergenerational cycle of low literacy and disadvantage for years to come.
Living in poverty doubles a childs chances of starting and leaving school without the literacy skills they need to succeed in life. 4.5 million UK children currently live in poverty, with the number expected to rise to 5.1 million by 2020.
The National Literacy Trust wants to break this cycle of low literacy and poverty by ensuring every child has the literacy skills to live a happy, healthy and successful life, regardless of their background.
The National Literacy Trust is a registered charity no. 1116260 and a company limited by guarantee no. 5836486 registered in England and Wales and a registered charity in Scotland SC042944.
