As the 'ideal' buttocks evolve, Dr. Arthur M. Cambeiro, a Las Vegas plastic surgeon, uses innovative liposuction techniques to evolve his patients' results.

Online PR News � 03-July-2016 � Dr. Arthur Cambeiro (www.surgispa.net) says the increased popularity of the Brazilian butt lift has led him to combine innovative liposuction techniques at his Las Vegas practice for patients who want enhanced buttocks.

"The evolving perception of what constitutes aesthetically 'ideal' buttocks motivates women (and men) to consider buttock augmentation," Dr. Cambeiro says. "That's resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of Brazilian butt lift procedures."

The Las Vegas board-certified plastic surgeon says statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show a sharp increase in the number of Brazilian butt lifts, a procedure that takes fat from one area of the body and transfers it to the buttocks.

The fat transfer technique begins by removing fat via liposuction from an area of the body where it is unwanted, such as the thighs or abdomen. The fat is then processed to remove excess fluids and impurities. Once purified, the fat is injected into the buttocks, yielding a look that's widely regarded as more natural.

The number of procedures increased by 15% from 2013 to 2014. Its popularity accelerated the following year, with surgeons performing 14,705 Brazilian butt lifts in 2015, a 28% increase over 2014.

Dr. Cambeiro says fat grafting is preferred to synthetic implants for buttock augmentation.

"Implants are limited in their ability to contour the periphery of the gluteal region," he says, "while fat grafts offer much more flexibility and can be tailored to the patient's desires."

The research highlighting the preference of buttocks with shapes that are "more dramatic and curvier" was published in the June 2016 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It concluded that curvier buttocks represent a "new ideal."

The researchers asked more than 1,000 people evenly divided between men and women to look at images of buttocks that were digitally altered to show varying proportions. The results, according to the study, supported their hypothesis that "the growing media frenzy for more voluptuous buttocks has impacted the current perception of the ideal buttocks, making any previous standards outdated."

At his Las Vegas practice, Dr. Cambeiro may use a type of laser liposuction called Smartlipo Triplex to contour the area where the fat was extracted. Smartlipo melts fat and tightens skin in the treatment area. He also uses traditional liposuction techniques for harvesting fat to be grafted to the buttocks. Cambeiro emphasizes the importance of meticulously performed liposuction to the buttock augmentation procedure.

"I think it's important that we plastic surgeons think of liposuction not as an ancillary procedure, but as an integral part of buttock augmentation, especially in light of the paradigm shift we've seen in aesthetic preferences."
