Indian COVID-19 diagnostics market is estimated to see a decline in CAGR of 19.9%

India has significant scope for COVID-19 diagnostic owing to robust increase in the diagnostic tests in the country coupled with the growing number of positive COVID-19 cases. The Indian government expanded the network of government laboratories designated to test samples of suspected COVID-19 cases to 920 laboratories.

Among 920 government laboratories, 421 were approved to test for Real-Time PCR (RT PCR) tests, 467 for TrueNat screening tests, and 32 for CBNAAT testing. Moreover, 446 private laboratories were approved to conduct COVID-19 tests. Among 446 private laboratories, 275 are approved to test RT PCR tests, 94 to test for TrueNat tests and 77 to test for CBNAAT testing in the country.

The RT-PCR throat/nasal swab test has been the key diagnostic tests that were conducted across the country. The rapid antibody tests were withdrawn by ICMR within a few weeks due to over reliability concerns. However, ICMR has recently encouraged states to conduct serosurveys using an IgG ELISA test for COVID-19 diagnosis.

RT-PCR test diagnoses the infection by detecting the presence of live virus, the antibody test provides information about the history of infection by detecting antibodies specific to COVID-19. In the early stages of a pandemic, or after a period of suppression, RT-PCR is useful to identify the infected persons, trace their contacts, and isolate them to limit the spread of infection.
