Google killing Picasa; going to focus more on Google Photos

As per the Google announcement yesterday, Google is going to shut down Picasa and focus more on Google Photos service launched less than a year ago.

We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products,” Google Photos chief Anil Sabharwal said in a blog post.

Pictures or videos in Picasa online albums will be automatically available in people’s Google Photos accounts, according to Sabharwal.

Those who don’t wish to use Google Photos can able to view, download and delete photos in Picasa albums, but there Google is not going to do any update to Picasa software and users will not be able to add any more images.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this transition causes, but we want to assure you that we are doing this with the aim of providing the best photos experience possible,” Sabharwal said.

“Google Photos is a new and smarter product.”

Google Photos Shared albums will allow users to share their photos and videos to friends and family who forgets to share via email or social networks. This means they can make collaborative albums and those receiving the shared album can participate and add their own photos and videos. People can also receive notifications when new images are added and save the photos / videos from a shared album in Google Photos library.

Google Photos are getting popular now. More and more people people started using Google Photos app on their Tablets and Smartphones.
