Artificial Intelligence in the field of Dermatology, a branch of medicine primarily focused on the evaluation and treatment of skin disorders, including hair and nails, is taking a leap to simplify skin disorder diagnosis.
DY Patil Universitys Department of Dermatology is the first research facility in the country to evaluate AI tools efficiency in an OPD clinic for skin and hair problems.
In an effort to increase quick-detection of skin diseases and to more effectively increase clinician capacity, D.Y Patil department of Dermatology headed by Dr. Sharmila Patil with her team is exploring Artificial Intelligence in Diagnosing Skin Problems.
In Association with California based Polyfins Technology Inc., D.Y. Patil is conducting research using an AI-enabled application Tibot (www.tibot.ai).
Tibot, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled application, uses the latest deep learning technology and machine learning tools to predict the Top 3 skin conditions the user is suffering from. It will also give a confidence score for each disease: the confidence score tells the user how confident Tibot is about a particular analysis.
How AI is used for diagnosis in Dermatology
The AI App has a user-friendly interface wherein you have to take a picture of the skin area and follow the instructions. Tibot uses the latest deep-learning neural networks to analyze and detect the skin condition based on the images. It not only scans the image of the skin uploaded by the user but also poses a multilevel series of questions intelligently ordered one after another; based on the answer given to the previous question like a physician would do to further narrow down the exact Diagnosis.
Tibot tracks 12 high-level common skin conditions which comprise a large majority of skin problems.
?Alopecia
?Bacterial Skin Infections
?Benign Tumors
?Eczema
?Fungal Infections
?Immunological Skin Disorders
?Malignant Tumors
?Psoriasis
?Skin Infestations
?Viral Infections
?Pigmentation Disorders
These conditions are further classified into 90 low-level secondary classifications as they proceed in the investigation.
Tibot doesnt just stop on the conclusion of the diagnosis based on AI but also provides you with a rich resource of information from its Knowledge Base to provide detailed information about the condition diagnosed.
It further details the seriousness of the condition, whether to meet with a physician and a possible course of action to be followed.
AI apps like Tibot leverage the medical knowledge it has been trained on by comparing the symptoms with the skin problems. Learning algorithms become more precise and accurate as they interact with training data, thereby allowing us to gain unprecedented insights into diagnostics. It learns every day as it sees more cases and becomes smarter to predict the condition.
Global Dermatology market
Market research firm BCC Research projects that the global market for skin disease treatment technologies will reach $20.4 billion in 2020. Based on $17.1 billion in market revenue in 2015, this anticipated increase represents a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.6 percent. Thereby hinting a flourishing market for the Technology.
