athenahealth Expands its Global Corporate Social Responsibility Program in 2022

Highlights include adding 24 clinics to its U.S. Free Clinic Partnership Program and adding a second mobile medical unit in Bengaluru, India

WATERTOWN, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–athenahealth, Inc., a leading provider of network-enabled software and services for medical groups and health systems nationwide, today announced that its athenaGives corporate social responsibility program increased its global impact in 2022, expanding its reach to more communities and partners.

Program highlights for the year include new partnerships and the expansion of existing partnerships with organizations that align with the athenaGives mission to provide equitable access to healthcare for all; improve food security; and support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

In 2022, athenaGives added 24 clinics to its Free Clinic Partnership Program, which provides access to athenahealths clinician experience and support services at no cost to them. The program now serves 418 free and charitable clinics in the United States. By partnering with free and charitable clinics across the country, athenahealth provides crucial support for these clinics so they can deliver high-quality healthcare to underserved patients and communities. In 2021, the clinics involved in athenahealth’s Free Clinic Partnership Program increased patient visits by 119%, compared to the previous year, to more than one million patients served. Of these patient visits, 54% were from low-income zip codes.

Also in the United States, athenahealth partnered with MedShare, a humanitarian aid organization dedicated to improving access to healthcare by sourcing and directly delivering high quality surplus medical supplies and equipment to marginalized communities around the world. In 2022, athenahealth assembled 3,000 MedShare clean birthing kits designed to create a safe, hygienic birth environment for women in these communities, many of whom do not have access to quality childbirth health services. The kits can potentially impact 6,000 lives, as each kit includes materials for the baby and the parent.

In India, athenahealth reached key milestones with its partnership with Smile Foundation through its Smile on Wheels program in Chennai, serving more than 20,000 patients in just over one year. Because of the successes, athenahealth plans to expand its Smile on Wheels Program to Bengaluru. Smile on Wheels is a national-level mobile hospital program focused on serving underprivileged children and women. Through the program, athenahealth provides financial support for a Smile on Wheels mobile medical unit to provide primary healthcare services to underserved communities.

In partnership with athenahealth, India FoodBanking Network, a leading national hunger relief organization, launched the Midday Meal Program in schools across Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune to help combat India’s child malnutrition rates, which are among the highest in the world. The Midday Meal Program aims to reduce child hunger and improve nutrition by providing more than 1,225 underprivileged school children with access to daily meals.

“Throughout 2022, athenaGives continued to grow its partnerships in the United States and India through new and existing relationships, and we strengthened our commitment to equitable health access, reducing food insecurity, and supporting STEM education across the globe,” said Gillian Perron, head of athenaGives. “We look forward to what 2023 has in store for our program. All the nonprofit organizations we partner with make a difference in so many lives, and we are proud to be a part of something so impactful.”

In addition to its growth efforts, athenaGives also hosted a service month in September, contributing to 52 nonprofit organizations in the United States and India.
