Art director Syou Nam Thai has recently garnered attention for his pivotal role in the film installation Homing Instinct, directed by Oscar-nominated producer Lydia Dean Pilcher.
Homing Instinct, a 26-minute film presented on a continuous loop, was showcased at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts in Woodstock, NY, from September 27 to October 1, 2023, in conjunction with the Woodstock Film Festival. The exhibition was supported by a residency from the Silver Sun Foundation.
This immersive project delves into themes of displacement and environmental upheaval, offering audiences a profound exploration of human resilience amid climate crises.

As the art director, Syou Nam Thai was instrumental in shaping the visual narrative of Homing Instinct. His meticulous attention to detail and innovative design concepts brought the film's near-future setting to life, effectively conveying the emotional gravity of rising sea levels and mandated evacuations. Collaborating closely with Pilcher, he ensured that each visual element resonated with the overarching themes of the installation.
“Homing Instinct sparks a serious yet mystical discussion about the effects of climate change on the status quo. We wanted the audience to be immersed in this new reality, and there was no better way of doing that than a three-screen movie that wraps around the viewer. Editing and projecting a three-channel short film came with its challenges, but in the end, we were able to showcase a new format for visual storytelling.”
Thai, who is an art director, has collaborated on several notable projects in recent years, including Apple TV’s sci-fi series Sunny, starring Rashida Jones, and Spike Lee’s upcoming thriller, Highest 2 Lowest. Most recently, he served as art director on Lydia Dean Pilcher’s film installation Homing Instinct, further cementing his reputation for blending atmospheric design with socially conscious storytelling.
Since their collaboration on Homing Instinct, Syou Nam has continued working with Pilcher on several other climate-driven projects. Most recently, the pair collaborated with the NYC Writers Climate Collective to showcase climate stories in the Climate Imaginarium on Governor’s Island.
Homing Instinct: Letting Go of the Shore, a cinematic installation by Lydia Dean Pilcher, is on view at the Weston Art Gallery from April 25 to June 8, 2025. Based on Dani McClain's story, the exhibition explores themes of displacement and environmental crisis through dance and narrative.
Homing Instinct stands as a testament to the collaborative synergy between Pilcher and Syou Nam Thai. Their combined efforts have resulted in an installation that not only highlights pressing environmental issues but also showcases the power of visual storytelling in eliciting empathy and understanding.
