Alvarez & Marsal Opens New Office in Malaysia Led by Managing Director Tze Yann Tan

Firmwide growth and increased market demand fuels A&Ms Asia-Pacific investments and lines of service

KUALA LUMPUR–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) today announced the opening of its new office in Malaysia, with the appointment of Corporate Performance Improvement (CPI) Managing Director, Tze Yann (Z) Tan as country leader. A&M’s Malaysia office extends the firm’s geographic footprint by leveraging its newly launched Southeast Asia and Australia (SEAA) business unit and fusing the firm’s strategic growth plans with its regional commitment.

In his new role, Mr. Tan will lead a team of about 20 A&M Malaysia professionals. He will work with Utsav Garg, a Managing Director and head of A&M’s SEAA business unit, to marshal the firm’s CPI, Private Equity Performance Improvement, and Restructuring & Turnaround lines of service, both focused on addressing market concerns and solving regional clients’ complex problems. Yoong Ming Chin, a Senior Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Performance Improvement practice in Southeast Asia and Australia, will also join the Malaysia office.

Luis De Lucio, Managing Director and Head of Alvarez & Marsal’s Emerging Markets practice, said, “The Malaysia office opening represents the next phase of our Asia-Pacific (APAC) growth strategy. By aligning our operations in Singapore, Indonesia and Australia we are furthering our ability to maximize value and drive change for clients as we lay the groundwork for a future office in Vietnam. Tze’s and Yoong Ming’s in-depth market knowledge and experience enhances our global network of boots-on-the-ground experts.”

Mr. Tan brings 20 years of experience in end-to-end operations performance improvement and supply chain management gained in both consulting and corporate roles. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Tan spent 12 years with SC Johnson and Son in Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur, where he most recently served as Senior Director and Head of Supply Chain for Asia-Pacific. Before that, he served as SC Johnson and Son’s Director for Greater China Supply Chain and China Manufacturing Operations. He also spent eight years with McKinsey & Company.

Mr. Chin brings more than 13 years of strategy and operations consulting experience in the telecommunications, media and technology, financial services, payments, automotive, pharmaceutical, and retail industries across Southeast Asia. Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Chin served as Senior Managing Consultant with Mastercard Advisors, Asia Pacific, for three years. He also served as Senior Project Manager following eight years with Roland Berger SEA.

Mr. Garg noted that A&M’s value proposition of supporting corporate and PE clients with hands-on execution aimed at realizing tangible results was increasingly important given significant market disruption across Southeast Asia. “A number of our corporate and private equity clients are facing critical challenges with the perfect storm of a changing economic environment, tightening liquidity situation, supply chain disruptions, and volatility in commodity markets,” he said. “Tze and Yoong Ming represent A&M’s muddy, boots-on-the-ground philosophy that enables us to address growing market demand in Malaysia and across SEAA.”

Mr. Tan added, “Continuing uncertainty and economic volatility calls for A&M’s practical approach and results-driven mindset. The firm’s integrated structure will help clients across Malaysia and SEAA capitalize on opportunities and mitigate risks.”

Mr. Tan earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan and an executive MBA from Kellogg-HKUST School of Management. Mr. Chin earned a bachelor’s degree in mechatronics engineering from Monash University Malaysia.
